Magers-Powell take on the Alabama A & M as new Head Coach
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama --Rose Magers-Powell, a former U.S. Olympic volleyball player, has been named as new head volleyball coach at Alabama A&M.
New Alabama A&M volleyball coach Rose Magers-Powell She replaces Nedra Brown, who resigned in April and is now associate athletic director for internal operations/senior woman administrator at Jackson State.
Magers-Powell becomes the fifth head coach hired by director of athletics Bryan Hicks in his tenure, which began in June 2012. She joins James Spady (football), Mitch Hill (baseball), Semeka Randall (womens' basketball) and Nakeya Hall (softball) on that list.
"We are excited to welcome Coach Powell to the Bulldog family as head volleyball coach," Hicks said in a press release. "Her experience as a student-athlete, coach and community leader will continue to enhance our proud volleyball program."
She comes to Alabama A&M from nearby Martin Methodist, where she began in 1996 after four years as the Lee High School volleyball coach. She posted a 367-279 record at Martin Methodist and 108-50 at Lee.
She is a native of Big Springs, Tex., and played college volleyball at the University of Houston, where she was MVP, captain and All-Regional Team.
Magers-Powell was a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic volleyball team that won a silver medal in Los Angeles. She played two years on the USA national team and spent nine seasons in Japan as a professional player and coach, three times winning MVP honors.
She makes her home in Huntsville with her husband, Harry, and two sons, William and Brandon.
