PULASKI, Tenn. – Alabama A&M head volleyball coach Rose Powell will be inducted this month into the Martin Methodist College Sports Hall of Fame.
Powell, who helped transition Martin Methodist from a junior college into the four-year era, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during 2016 Homecoming festivities the weekend of Feb. 20. She and former Martin Methodist player Melissa Steelmanon will be the 56th and 57th inductees since the Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1996.
Powell arrived at Martin Methodist as its first-ever volleyball coach in the four-year era in 1996. During her 14-year, Powell amassed 373 victories and was a three-time TranSouth Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
Powell led the RedHawks to three consecutive conference titles (2005, 2006, 2007). In her final season on the RedHawk bench, Powell was ranked 11th among NAIA active head coaches in career victories. She was named the head coach at Alabama A&M in 2014.
A standout at the University of Houston and a member of the UH Hall of Honor, Powell left school for the 1984 Summer Olympics and won the silver medal with the U.S. women's volleyball team. She then spent more than nine years in Japan as a professional
Upon her hire at Martin Methodist in 1996, Powell made her education a point of emphasis, a challenge that was realized in May 2000 when she received her bachelor's degree in human services from Martin Methodist.
